Mounting and Thrusting…

…I’ve no idea what “hypothetical” means, but I can envisage a set of circumstances in which I might…

It struck me that I’ve broken the back of this Lathe Rebuild and so, with renewed enthusiasm, I set about assembling the Gearbox and Top Cover.

This photo, from “a box full of neutrals”, shows the parts ready for assembly…

After leaving it alone for a while, first I polished all the shiny parts with 2500 wet and dry paper, lubricated with some oil. The oil is VG32, which is, as recommended in the Lubrication Guide in the Manual, for general lubrication. It’s thinner than the other recommended oil, VG68, which is for things like the bed slideways.

With everything well oiled, I could put all the parts back together quite easily and offer the whole assembly up to The Bed…

There’s two of these hex screws to hold it to The Bed, and also another near the bottom, but that is accessed through a hole in the front and is a captured slot screw. I tightened all three and so this is the Gearbox mounted…

Next I assembled the Top Cover and offered that up to the Gearbox, but flipped it upside down front to back…

The little bronzy block is the Thrust Block and its spigot goes in to the hole in the quadrant above it. The Thrust block is sitting in a gear which can slide from left to right. It’s moved, via the quadrant, by this knobby lever…

Once I put the Top Cover on, it worked very well. This is a view through the front of the Gearbox with the Top Cover bolted on and the Lever in the centre position. The Thrust Block – circled – is holding the sliding gear in the middle…

Moving the Lever to the left, slides the sliding gear to the right, and it engages cutouts in another gear, here circled in red…

Of course moving the Lever the other way slides the sliding gear to the left and it engages cutouts in a gear there…

I’ve no idea what this is for! Screwing or some such. Again, I’m sure I’ll find out on the course in September.

This is a couple of views of the Gearbox and Top Cover assembled and fitted…

Although I oiled everything, the two oil nipples on the top seem to let oil to the gear shaft bearings only. That’s the bright shaft poking out at top left. I can’t quite work out how oil gets to the other bearings. The general lubrication of the gear cogs seems to be from sump pick up. Again, September..

More gear assembly soon…
